Are You Making This Common Laundry Mistake?

Not long ago, most Australian households used twin tub washing machines to do their laundry. These days the Australian market is increasingly moving away from top loaders and more towards front loading washing machines as they use less power and water and are generally acknowledged to be better for the environment. In fact, according to Savewater Alliance Inc, a front loader can use up to 70% - or 36,000 litres less water than a top loader per year in a typical household!

But, one of the common complaints about front loaders is that a full wash cycle often takes in excess of 2 hours. The reason for the lengthy wash time of course, comes down to energy efficiency. In order to achieve a lower energy usage the washing time has to be increased and clothing has to be agitated for longer to achieve the same super-clean results. But there are times, aren’t there, when you need something in a hurry. Or you don’t want to spend the best part of the day wading through Mount Washmore and putting on load after load. That’s when the temptation to hit the ‘Quick Cycle’ washes over us. (Sorry, terrible pun!)

Most top loaders have a ‘quick wash’ function nowadays, so you can decrease the 2+ hour wash, down to around 30 minutes. Some machines even have a 15 minute quick wash option! But how clean can your clothes really get in such a short space of time?

Things to Consider Before Using the Quick Wash Function on Your Top Loader

The Quick Wash cycle is designed for lightly soiled clothing that just need to be freshened up. Fabrics that are heavily soiled or stained are better suited to a full wash cycle. Similarly, if germs and viruses are a concern we do not recommend using the quick wash option on your machine. Read more here about how your choice in laundry detergent can help prevent you from getting sick.

If you are going to use the Quick Wash function your choice of laundry detergent is extremely important. For instance if you are using a laundry powder, by the time it has dissolved and got into the wash properly the cycle is almost over – so it isn’t given enough time to act. As a result, the Quick wash is often unsuccessful at removing stains and giving clothes a really good wash. The reduced rinse time can also mean that your powder is not properly rinsed from your clothing which presents a number of issues. Firstly, if you use the Quick Wash cycle regularly, detergent will build up on the fabrics resulting in a greying, discolouration to them. Secondly, some laundry detergents contain chemicals that can irritate your family’s skin.

Laundry powder can also leave residue in your machine when the Quick Wash is used regularly, and continued use can lead to bacteria to build up in the machine also.

By contrast, Dominant Double L Liquid detergent is quickly dissolved and is able to start the cleaning action much faster. It also contains a triple enzyme system that attacks grease and grime for excellent stain removal. Plus it can be used in cold, warm or hot water with great results.

Getting your clothing clean on any cycle depends on three factors; the agitation in the wash cycle, the water temperature and your detergent. By using the Quick Wash function you are reducing both the agitation and the water temperature, so you need a laundry detergent that can pick up the slack and still produce great results.

For all your Quick Wash needs, we recommend using Dominant Double L liquid detergent.
